Press release
24 July 2025
Tewkesbury Borough Council has announced that there will be a review of its grass cutting strategy across the borough, following feedback from residents and councillors.
Previously, Tewkesbury Borough Council maintained certain areas on behalf of Gloucestershire County Council and topped up the standard two cuts a year to between eight and 12 cuts a year. That responsibility has now returned to the county council on the standard schedule. Changes to the cutting schedule were announced in May.
Cllr Murray Stewart, Tewkesbury Borough Council’s Lead Member for Environmental Services, said: “We know that many of our residents and councillors have noticed changes to grass cutting in parts of our borough – and we want to thank everyone who’s taken the time to share their concerns, we’re sorry the transition hasn’t been as smooth as it should have been.
“Our borough councillors will be meeting later this month to explore interim options – including full cuts and edging, as well as creating clear pathways through areas left to grow for ecological reasons. We’re working closely with the county and parish councils to find a more balanced, long-term solution that meets the grass-cutting needs of each area.”
In the meantime, steps are being taken to establish a more balanced and responsive approach. Contractors have been sent to address priority locations identified by members – such as Mitton and parts of Newtown – and officers continue to assess other areas that may require attention.
If residents feel that an area of overgrown grass may be causing a safety issue, they can report it online at https://fixmystreet.gloucestershire.gov.uk/ or call Gloucestershire County Council on 08000 514 514.
A report outlining costed options for grass cutting in future years will be presented to a meeting of Tewkesbury Borough Council later this year.
